TMD Therapy

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull on each side, allowing for your jaw to move properly. When issues arise affecting this joint and the surrounding muscles and soft tissues, it’s known as Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), which can cause symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, jaw stiffness, difficulty opening or closing your mouth, teeth clenching or grinding, and discomfort in the cheeks and temples.

Several issues can cause TMD, with the most common being subconscious clenching or grinding of the teeth, often occurring during sleep or times of high stress. Symptoms related to this type of TMD can fluctuate depending on your stress levels and may include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, jaw stiffness, difficulty opening or closing your mouth, teeth grinding, and discomfort in the cheeks and temples. Other potential causes include problems like a displaced jaw joint disc, osteoarthritis damage, joint swelling, poor posture leading to muscle strain, or joint inflammation.

During your visit, our team will take a thorough dental and medical history to understand your symptoms and any injuries or chronic conditions. Dr. Neal will perform a detailed exam of your head, neck, jaw muscles, and joints, and may suggest a screening X-ray to help identify the underlying cause. Based on this assessment, we will recommend a personalized, conservative treatment plan designed to alleviate your TMD discomfort, reduce stiffness, and improve jaw function, helping you find relief and restoring comfort to your daily life.
